About Lessons : Lessons is an ongoing, multipart video work by Martine Syms, composed of 30-second videos playing in a continual, randomlyordered stream. Snapshots of disconnected experiences and subjects accumulate into a mass of fragmentary narratives, relating (directly and incidentally) to the lives of black Americans. Drawn from myriad sources and contexts – including YouTube videos, 1980s TV shows, and personal archival footage – these self-contained segments are taken from a growing corpus that Syms has been compiling since 2014.
