Wednesday February, 3rd : “Awakening the Spirit of Eternal Rest” guided tour with Alex Cecchetti Museé du Louvre, 7:30 pm. Meeting point: Louvre, Denon, Ground Floor, Salle du Manège, Room A The Spirit of Eternal Rest is an object of multiplicity. It combines an antique funerary effigy with the body of 3rd century AD sculpture. The assemblage was vandalized and mutilated in 1670 by the Duke of Mazarin; traces of this act of madness remain visible on the sculpture’s body. Restored with new marble body parts, the sculpture is known as the « Hermaphrodite Mazarin. » Its story embraces the XVII and XIX centuries from the Cardinal Mazarin to Louis XIV, as well as Hortense Mancini to Rodin. The object is currently on display at the Musée du Louvre in Paris. This project has been realized with the generous support of The Elephant Trust and the Saison de la Turquie in France.
