Monteverdi Ici – Deeply, Feeling Filling the World by Laure Prouvost is a tapestry that references a video by the artist entitled Monteverdi Ici (2018). Both artworks feature a woman’s naked body as a central visual element. In the video, the woman’s body is outdoors, with her back to the camera, moving her arms gently through the surrounding flowers. The focus of this film is on tactility and the texture of the woman’s skin, depicted through the fragmented shots of her body. In the tapestry, the same woman’s body offers her back to the spectator. In this medium the flowers that surround her have become surreal, alien objects that appear lifeless and industrialized. The woman towers over the defamiliarized objects like a giant, skewing perspective and scale. This image is complemented by an excerpt from the film, the inscription reads “deeply, feeling filing the world” at the bottom of the tapestry. This work can be interpreted as a self-portrait of the artist, as well as an extension of her multi-disciplinary examination of the female body.
Laure Prouvost is a multi-disciplinary artist best known for her films and immersive large-scale multi-media installations, in which she plays with words and their meanings in non-linear ways. Using humor as entrapment, Prouvost’s work addresses miscommunication and how ideas become lost in translation. The artist combines existing and imagined personal memories with artistic and literary references in different mediums that dialogue with each other, such as film, sculpture, painting, tapestry, performance, and fragmentary tales. This combination creates sensual environments of unfamiliar worlds that absorb the spectator in a form of escapism.
