Juliana Góngora

Installation (Installation)

Lengüitas sagradas (Blessed Little Tongues) by Juliana Góngora is the result of a careful creative job between Juliana Góngora and the Koreguaje community and their workshop Masipai. During several months, the artist and the community leaders Juven Piranga and Yinela Piranga kept an essential communication to materialize one hundred miniature bags, knitted with cumare and containing tiger chocho and rattle seeds inside. Each ‘little tongue’ has been knitted using the colors that identify the clans that form the artisans of the Masipai group (wise people).

Tan Zi Hao

Installation (Installation)

Tan Zi Hao produced Pest Control 1110, 709, 428 (or, a Myth for Another) , in response to the Bersih social movement, that catalyzed three rallies on 10th November 2007, 9th July 2011 and 28th April 2012, respectively, to demand a clean electoral roll. Tan Zi Hao’s work is a commentary on the Bersih protest movement; “Bersih” is the Malay word for “clean” and the movement was an important precursor to the changes in Malaysia following the 2018 elections when the Barisan Nasional coalition lost power for the first time since the country’s independence in 1957. Najib Razak, the prime minister ousted in those elections and the focus of some of the biggest demonstrations during the Bersih movement was sent to prison in 2020 after being found guilty of massive theft of public funds.

Sky Hopinka

Film & Video (Film & Video)

Dislocation Blues by Sky Hopinka is a portrait of the 2016 Standing Rock protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline in South Dakota. Working against grand narratives and myth-making, Hopinka attempts to provide a clear look towards the participants of the protest movement and the protectors of the water – their testimonies, reflections, and histories. In the film, Cleo Keahna tells about the everyday life of the camp and its difficulties and Terry Running Wild shares his dreams for the future.

Tina Modotti

Photography (Photography)

She had a keen eye for architectural composition, and captured eloquent details using a delicate platinum print process. In 1929 she was deported from Mexico because of her involvement in the Communist party and went to Europe.

Apartment on Cardboard

Chris Johanson

Painting (Painting)

Apartment on Cardboard (2000) is an exterior view of an abstracted apartment building. Viewers unwittingly become voyeurs, peering through the rectangles that stand for windows and observing the residents therein, who ponder questions both mundane and existential: “Where is Ron now?” and “What have I become?” The queries and characters are treated democratically—not judged, praised, or subjected to hierarchy. While their thoughts are specific, the painting captures a universal urban activity: looking across to the building next door and wondering about its residents, all the while knowing that they have probably looked over and wondered about us, as well.

Connie Zheng

Film & Video (Film & Video)

The Lonely Age by Connie Zheng is the first chapter in a trilogy of short experimental films about the complex temporalities of navigating ongoing environmental crises, as seen through the lens of seeds real and imagined. The film is set in a highly toxic and ecologically ravaged near future, in which people begin to hear rumors of seeds that have washed up on the shores of California after escaping from a factory in China. The seeds are rumored to possess curative properties, but they are also said to be sentient.
