The Democratic Surround

A conversation with photography curator Charlotte Cotton and Stanford professor Fred Turner, author of the new book the democratic surround (Multimedia and American Liberalism from World War II to the Psychedelic Sixties), about Herbert Bayer and Edward Steichen’s famous MoMA exhibition The Family of Man (1955). Having traveled to thirty-seven foreign countries, it’s one of the most widely viewed exhibitions in history. The exhibition was “…designed to help Cold War Americans imagine themselves part of a racially and culturally diverse global society.” Event at 5pm
