Malik Gaines on Sylvester


Drinks 6pm, Program 7pm Malik Gaines discusses Sylvester, who was a member of San Francisco’s Cockettes troupe before becoming a disco star of the 1970s. Sylvester combined a queer performance of gender with signs and sounds of musical virtuosity, making a unique contribution to his era. Gaines considers Sylvester among other radical performers in his forthcoming book “Excesses of the Sixties: Black Performance on the Outskirts of the Left.” Malik Gaines is an artist and writer based in New York. He is a member of the performance group My Barbarian and assistant professor of Performance Studies at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
