LEAP Residency

LEAP is a bilingual art magazine of contemporary art and culture from China. Published in Chinese and English, in print and online, LEAP presents a mix of contemporary art coverage and cultural commentary on local and international art scenes, with a special focus on art from China. Its three sections, SHANG, ZHONG, and XIA (top, middle and bottom) are differently conceived. SHANG offers a wide range of subjects including arts, fashion, architecture, design, and film, focusing on the present and the scene of art world. ZHONG begins with a cover package of stories on a key topic (for example the decade in review, spaces of production, and the China-Africa connection) alongside artists’ profiles, visual features, and portfolio. XIA contains introductions and commentary on exhibitions from around the world. As part of the Kadist magazine residency, editors Sasha Zhao and Fei Lai will undertake research towards upcoming issues of LEAP with a view of expanding their editorial scope. Meeting with local artists, writers, editors and curators in the Bay Area, they hope to initiate conversations and explore possible collaborations. Sasha Zhao is a writer, editor, curator, and musician based in Beijing. She joined LEAP five years ago after experiences in industrial design and online publishing. As a musician and lyricist, she has lent her talent to various artists’ video and fashion projects. Fei Lai is a writer, translator, editor, and video worker based in Beijing. She has a background in photography and filmmaking and has previously worked for various institutions and productions. Please contact Fei Lai if you are interested in meeting LEAP while they are in residence until mid-February.
