Adelita Husni-Bey Workshop
What does it mean to compete? How has competition affected you? How do you encounter it outside of the realm of sport? Artist Adelita Husni-Bey invites you to participate in a two-day workshop where you will work closely with other athletes to explore these questions through written and oral narrative, as well as theater. The results of the workshop will be performed (and filmed) in a secret location. The final film will be screened as part of the artist’s upcoming exhibition in San Francisco at Kadist Art Foundation in November, 2015. Workshop sessions will take place tentatively at the Sports Medicine Center located at 747 52nd Street, Oakland, CA 94609 on: Tuesday, September 29th between 4:30pm – 7pm (TBC) (introduction to theater exercises and narration) Tuesday, October 6th, between 4:30pm- 7pm (TBC) (working with our body and scripting) SECRET LOCATION FILMING WILL TAKE PLACE ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18TH from 3PM-7PM Suggested criteria for participation: – ability to attend all sessions – feel comfortable taking part in the film – have suffered an injury (physical or emotional) competing – over 13 years old No preparation is required, no prior acting experience is necessary, and no specification in type or scale of injury. Sports Basement gift cards will be offered to participants and refreshments will be provided throughout the workshop. The workshop dates are flexible to accomodate participants’ schedules. About Sports Medicine Center for Young Athletes at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland : Children’s Hospital Oakland’s Sports Medicine Center for Young Athletes is a specially-designated facility dedicated to the care, treatment, and education of young athletes in the East Bay area. We have three facilities located in Oakland, Walnut Creek and San Ramon. Because growing bones and cartilage, unlike those of a skeletally-mature adult, are susceptible to injuries, young athletes should be managed differently than older athletes.
