Duto Hardono: Variation & Improvisation for ‘In Harmonia Progressio’

KADIST and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, are pleased to co-present a performance by Indonesia-based artist Duto Hardono, Variation & Improvisation for ‘In Harmonia Progressio’ (2017). Variation & Improvisation for ‘In Harmonia Progressio’ is part of a series of work that focuses on sound loops as a fundamental element of his performance – a metaphor that Hardono employs as he examines the human condition, such as time and temporal spatiality. Performers are instructed to vocalize ‘In’, ‘Harmonia’, and ‘Progressio’ – words that make up a Latin phrase that means “progress inside harmony.” Each voice is modified for intonation, pitch, and amplitude in a minimal musical composition. This performance transforms voice and language with the sound of the improvised composition filling the space. It is a raw process of action and reaction that requires the performers to be physically and cerebrally attuned to each other, resembling the primordial forms of human communication. The work is part of the KADIST collection. This performance takes place as part of an afternoon of public programs during the opening celebration of Into View: New Voices, New Stories at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. This collaboration with the Asian Art Museum is part of a series of public programs for de montañas submarinas el fuego hace islas , curated by Yina Jiménez Suriel on view at KADIST through February 17, 2023. This will be the fourth activation of the performance as part of de montañas submarinas el fuego hace islas : Pivô, S?o Paulo on September 3, 2022, at KADIST San Francisco on October 12, 2023; at Delfina Foundation, London, on January 17, 2024.
