Cao Shu, OCAT x KADIST Artist-in-residence 2022
OCAT Shanghai and KADIST are pleased to announce that artist Cao Shu has been selected for a research residency at KADIST San Francisco as part of the OCAT x KADIST Emerging Media Artist Residency Program 2022. Cao Shu was selected by an esteemed international jury from the shortlist of artists selected for the Emerging Media Artist Exhibition 2022. Cao Shu has been awarded a three-week fully-funded research residency on the merit of his eminent media practice, the quality of his past works, and his residency proposal. While in residence, the artist will have an opportunity to further his research on the art of video games, and conduct new research on the structure and architecture of Alcatraz prison, informing the production of new work. He will receive support for this research from KADIST San Francisco’s curatorial team and have access to KADIST’s international network of scholars, curators, artists, and advisors. Cao Shu (b. 1987, Shandong Province, lives and works in Hangzhou). Cao Shu working interfaces include but are not limited to 3D digital moving image, sound installation, and interactive games. He often constructs narration in a restrained way, offering the audience a new perspective of things, and through his transdisciplinary practice, a multi-branched network of meanings is formed. His works are often based on a specific place and space and ask open-ended questions. He hopes to reactivate historical events or personal memory at the perceptual level through experiments with different materials and media. In addition, he is also interested in the notions of misreading and dislocation based on different cultural and technological environments in history. In recent years, Cao Shu has been an artist in residence at atelier Mondial in Basel, Switzerland (2017), Koganecho Bazzaar Art Festival, Yokohama (2019), and Muffatwerk the venue for international art and culture in Munich (2020). His works have won awards such as the Exposure Award 2021 of PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai, the New Narrative Award from the Long Week of Short Films, and the Beijing International Short Film Festival Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement. His works have been exhibited in Kunsthausbaselland, Macao Art Museum, UCCA dune, Asia Society Hong Kong Center, Beijing Minsheng Art Museum, OCAT Shanghai, and OCAT Shenzhen. The members of the international jury were: -Barbara London, curator and writer, founder of the video-media exhibition and collection programs at The Museum of Modern Art, producer of the podcast series Barbara London Calling , and author of Video/Art, the First Fifty Years (Phaidon, 2020) -Marie Martraire, Director of Collections & Special Programs of KADIST, pursuing a Ph. D. in Film and Moving Image at Concordia University, Montréal, Canada -Ruijun Shen, artist and independent curator, Director of China Programs of KADIST, and former Chief Curator at Guangdong Times Museum -Jo-ey Tang, Director of KADIST San Francisco, former curator at Palais de Tokyo, Paris and arts editor of n+1 -Yang Fudong, artist, graduate from the Department of Oil Painting at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, and is among the most important contemporary artists in China today Click here for Chinese.
