Arseniy Zhilyaev's Avant-Garde Museology

5pm For its first launch in the US, former KADIST AIR Arseniy Zhilyaev , introduces his recent book Avant-Garde Museology , published by e-flux with support from KADIST. Following the agenda set by the Russian Proletariat Revolution of 1917, art became a means of production in service of a new communist society. Institutional transformations and experiments in this period were led by artists of the historical avant-garde as well as by Marxist museologists and representatives of Russian Cosmism who envisioned the Art Museum as the ultimate frontier of human expression capable of overcoming all limits, whether natural or defined by earth-bound political or economic orders. The artist will discuss the notion of the innovative museum and exhibition projects from the late 19th to early 20th century in Russia and the USSR that comprise this groundbreaking book. Zhilyaev is in San Francisco for a residency at Headlands Center for the Arts . Many thanks to the Headlands for their support of this program.
