Jinoos Taghizadeh

Drawing & Print (Drawing & Print)

Letter I Never Wrote is one of the most powerful series of Jinoos Taghizadeh. This is a series of stamps reflecting on variety of issues that the artist finds them important and critical to be discussed and seen by the public, which is also hidden and not talked enough by the Iranian government. From extremely political issues such as the chain murderers of intellectuals and politicians in Iran to environmental changes and archeological decadence of historical heritage, Taghizadeh is using one of the most popular form of circulation for information and communication to put these issues on top of them.

Bo Wang

Film & Video (Film & Video)

The Orbit by Bo Wang is based on the story of Hu Na, a former professional tennis player who was known for defecting from the People’s Republic of China. While on tour in California for the 1982 Federation Cup with the China Federation Cup team, Hu Na fled her hotel room and sought refuge at a friend’s home on her second day in the United States. In April 1983, she requested political asylum on the basis that she had a well-founded fear of persecution because of repeatedly refusing to join the Communist Party of China’s tennis team.

Li Jinghu

Sculpture (Sculpture)

Benefiting from its geographic proximity to Hong Kong, since the 1980s Dongguan has become the factory of the world, with toys, plastic products and clothing as the major industries in the town. During its heyday, the region produced 50% of the world’s manufactured toys, but since 2008, the toy industry has declined as the factories moved to South East Asia. Michael Dean

Sculpture (Sculpture)

The sculpture shores shored (Working Title) makes reference to the human form. The two sides of the sculpture are distinctively different, with the rear showing an anamorphic-corrugated structure, the front suggesting the human form, making perhaps an unconscious reference to Giacometti or Barnett Newman. But whereas their work suggests immanence, Michael Dean refuses any notion of transcendence, remaining rooted in presentness .

Yto Barrada

Photography (Photography)

In this photographic series, Yto Barrada was interested in the logos of the buses that travel between North Africa and Europe. They become like abstract paintings that recall Modernist formal experimentation. They are somehow symptomatic of the circulation of goods and people that is made to sound so abstract.

O Africano

José Leonilson

O Africano (1984) is a large acrylic painting on canvas, made early in the artist’s career, and directly references both Leonilson’s artistic precursors and his desire to imagine and capture what it means to be Brazilian. It is about the importance for many Brazilians of their African ethnic and cultural heritage.
