Photography (Photography)

Calvin Warren calls it an ‘ontological equation’/or methods of estimating the odds to rise in the coming centuries by Kameelah Janan Rasheed is part of A Casual Mathematics , a series of interpretive art diagrams, which revisit W. E. B. Du Bois’s iconic data portraits in The Exhibit of American Negroes . This was a landmark exhibit within the Palace of Social Economy at the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris that demonstrated the progress of Black Americans through the visual display of quantitative sociological information.

Clément Rodzielski

Drawing & Print (Drawing & Print)

These photographs are installation shots of the exhibition De A à B, de B à P at Bielefelder Kunstverein (13 November 2010-30 January 2011). There, Clément Rodzielski had chosen to exhibit the series called Miroirs noirs ( Black Mirrors , black and white abstract screen prints) which is emblematic of his work. The piece of painted wood was not shown to the public; it moves and invests the space enigmatically.

Mahmoud Khaled

Film & Video (Film & Video)

CAMARADERIE is a precursor to and a blueprint for Mahmoud Khaled’s later forays into queer aesthetics and modes of visual representation. This work is based on videos that the artist collected over the years through YouTube, of Egyptian professional bodybuilders exercising or rehearsing before posing in local and international competitions. The selection also includes videos of amateur young men from Cairo, who obsessively train and exhibit bodily transformations resulting from their admiration for those bodybuilders.

Donna Conlon and Jonathan Harker

Film & Video (Film & Video)

In Tapitapultas (2012), Donna Conlon and Jonathan Harker comment on mass consumerism and pollution by way of a game they invented. The artists used disposable spoons as catapults to shoot thousands of plastic bottle caps at a hole in a concrete platform. The platform was once part of a U. S. military installation in the Panama Canal Zone, and it is now an observation deck in a nature park.

Tino Sehgal

Performance (Performance)

Tino Sehgal’s This Exhibition requires an interpreter (in this particular piece, a gallery attendant) to faux faint each and every time a visitor enters into a given space. Upon hitting the cold, hard gallery floor, the seemingly confused interpreter writhes slowly on the ground while reciting a few lines from the curatorial statement in a whispered moan.
