Compositions such as Tree on Keystone (2011) become hyperreal versions of their real-world equivalents. Blalock resists the immediacy that we have come to expect from photography—that each photograph should communicate its message without delay.

Blalock resists the immediacy that we have come to expect from photography—that each photograph should communicate its message without delay. Within the dark obscurity of three, three, three (2013), he frustrates and complicates this conditioned response to the photographic medium, questioning the photograph’s purpose.
Lucas’s quadroquadro (círculo) employs familiar materials for the artist: wood, paper, and glass. A simple composition—a black circle inscribed on white paper, encased in a rectangular frame—is interrupted in Lucas’s work, the continuous geometry of the nested forms segmented into four broken shards. Pieced back together, these fragments comprise a whole, but it is a unity shattered, unsteadied.
On New Year’s Eve in 1965, Lisette Carmi met and photographed a group of transgender people living and working on the Via del Campo in Genoa–the main street for prostitution in the city, located in the former Jewish ghetto. This encounter was the beginning of a seven year relationship with the group, and led to the publication of I Travestiti (1972), a controversial book that comprised all of the images Carmi took of the group between 1965-1971. Forming close friendships with the people she portrayed, the artist rented an attic near Via del Campo in Genoa to live with them, she captured the everyday lives of the group, depicting sex work from a new perspective.

Historically, blondeness has been a signifier for desirability and beauty, speaking to “purity” — the purity of whiteness — like no other bodily attribute except, perhaps, blue eyes. In the twenty-first century, blondeness is the look desired by American presidents, pop stars, rappers, television announcers, Hollywood celebrities, the boy next door, and some Asian Americans, African Americans, white Americans, Arab Americans, and LatinX Americans. The desirability of blonde hair has no genre boundaries, no pronoun limitation, and no class limit.

Sara Cwynar’s composite photographs of found objects and images court feelings of time passing. Using studio sets, collage, and re-photography, she produces intricate tableaux that draw from magazine advertisements, postcards, or catalogs. Cwynar is interested in how design and popular images work on our psyches, in how their visual strategies infiltrate our consciousness.

Cwyner is both related to a photo conceptual tradition of photography from Vancouver as well as to a new school of photography working with digital manipulation, scanners, stock photography and the notion of photography after image making, both of which are represented in the Kadist collection via artists such as Arabella Campbell, Ron Terada, Tim Lee, Rodney Graham, Ian Wallace from Vancouver and artists such as Chris Wiley, Lucas Blalock, Erin Shirreff or John Houck, who recently have explored the idea of photography beyond image making....
