This article is published as part of the inaugural AE x Goethe-Institut Critical Writing Micro-Residency 2021/2022. Vietnamese filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha begins her film Reassemblage (1982) with a voice-over saying that she doesn’t “intend to speak about, just speak nearby.” Against the backdrop of rural Senegal, Minh-ha seeks to engage us to interrogate our values when we are presented with a different panorama of life.
