davi de jesus do nascimento’s earthy paintings, from the series sorvedouro , recall his memories as an essentially organic matter. Watercolor painting carries water as its foundational element and was the first technique that the artist applied to base his painting research on the river. He used to dip the brush on the prow of the boats: “I realized that the water is in deep dialogue with the flows of the river that I descend”. The eight compositions in the earth watercolor series aguamentos present elements of everyday life, bathed in mythical and sacred aspects of the Sanfranciscan waters. As part of this project, the artist considers his body as an instrument mediating the world and recognizes the magic and ancestry in the river stream, intimately connecting his family memory with the time flow of the river.


davi de jesus do nascimento grew up in Pirapora, a town in the north of Minas Gerais, which guides the narratives of his work, as does the heritage of his family of fishermen, laundresses, and Carranca masters. The artist’s investigations always start from the freshwater that flows through the São Francisco River, the largest river in Brazil. He collects affections and memories of his riverside ancestors as a possibility to continue navigating. In the artist’s words, the watercourse of his research is the water flow of his life.
